Why I play the Mandolin …………?
In early September 2010 I purchase a bowl-shaped mandolin made in 1961 by Suzuki. It is a piece of art and I fell in love with it as I held it in my hands. I had an immense desire to play it and hence I decided to look for a teacher. I finally decided to join the Kataoka Institute of Mandolin in Tokyo. On being asked by Michiko Kataoka as to why I wanted to learn the Mandolin, I simply replied ……It is romantic!
Five months down memory lane after learning the basics of mandolin I feel our relationship is too intense. On March 29th 2010 I was diagnosed by the doctors of St Luke’s International Hospital that I suffered from a serious disease ---- Vasculitis. It is almost a year and I survived. The Japanese Doctors credit my destiny while the Indian Doctors complement the Japanese for doing a great job. I feel that it is the good wishes of my near and dear ones running through my veins and above all because my Spiritual Master wanted me to completed certain incomplete tasks. It is during this period that I developed a relation with the Mandolin. I feel that it has given me a renewed source of energy. The Chinese Theory of Acupressure believes that our fingertips have nerves which link to all our organs. May be when I press the strings I get stimulated or it is the music. Presently I can only play basic notes but I look forward to playing divine music.
With the blessing of Michiko Kataoka I hope I will do, due justice to the strings of the Mandolin …………

なぜマンドリンを弾くのか？
２０１０年９月上旬、私は１９６１年に作られたスズキ製の丸い形をしたマンドリンを買いました。それは芸術作品に見え、手に持った瞬間とても気に入ってしまいました。マンドリンを弾きたい気持ちが抑えきれずに、私は先生を探しました。そしてついに東京にある、片岡マンドリン研究所に入門することになりました。片岡道子先生に、なぜマンドリンを習うのですか？と聞かれるたびに、いつも、ロマンチックだからです！と答えてきました。
マンドリンの基礎を習い始めてから５ヶ月、私とマンドリンの関係はとても強まったと思います。２０１０年３月２９日、私は聖路加国際病院の先生からとても深刻な病名を告げられました。動脈瘤です。あれからほぼ一年が経ち、命をつないできました。日本のドクターが私の運命を信じてくれたのです。インドのドクターも、私に施された治療を目の当たりにして日本のドクターの素晴らしさを賞賛しています。私の命が救われたのも周りの人たちの願いと血管を流れる愛すべき血液と、そして全ては、私が敬愛する精神的な師が未完成な業を完成までに導いてくれたのです。マンドリンと出逢ったのは、まさにこのときでした。マンドリンは私に日々のエネルギーを与えてくれます。中国の医学では指先の神経は全ての臓器に繋がっているといわれています。たぶん、マンドリンの弦を押さえる度に良い刺激になって、もしくは音楽が良い刺激なのかも知れません。今私は基本の楽譜を習っていますが、いつかは神に捧げる曲を弾きたいと思っています。
片岡道子先生のご指導のもと、私の願いはきっとかなうことでしょう。マンドリンの弦に思いをゆだねて。
